Fernie SAR stretched thin with multiple calls

Fernie Search and Rescue (SAR) was called out on three separate rescues July 2.

They included an injured mountain biker in Montane, an ATV rollover in the Wigwam and a water-tuber pinned under a log in the Elk River.

All were successfully rescued and handed over to BC Ambulance Service.

A fourth call for a serious vehicle incident near Lussier was eventually dealt with by a neighbouring group, Fernie SAR reported on social media.

“Two of the rescues were conducted in cooperation with Fernie Fire/Rescue. A number of community members are on both Fernie Fire and Fernie SAR and we are fortunate to enjoy such a close working relationship with this agency.

“Rapid response via Ascent Helicopters for the river rescue undoubtedly avoided a very serious outcome.

“The long weekend has stretched all our rescue resources,” Fernie SAR noted.
