Fernie Writers’ Series returns March 7 and 9
Booked! Fernie Writers’ Series is a favourite with Fernie book lovers. These events feature some of Canadaâs best and brightest literary talents, interviewed by local author Angie Abdou.
Upcoming March 7 and 9 at Fernie Heritage Library are Bradley Somer and his book âExtinctionâ and Eric Blehm and his work âThe Darkest White.â
Thursday, March 7 – Extinction: In a lonely valley, deep in the mountains, a ranger watches over the last surviving grizzly bear. With the natural world exhausted and in tatters, Ben has dedicated himself to protecting this single fragment of the wild.
One night, he hears voices in the valley-poachers, come to hunt his bear. A heart-pounding chase begins, crossing forests and mountainsides, passing centuries of human ruins. Sometimes hunter, sometimes prey-Ben must choose the bear’s fate and his own.
Is he willing to lay down his life for a dying breed? Is he willing to kill for it?
Saturday, March 9 – The Darkest White and author Eric Blehm in discussion with local photographer Mark Gallup.
The Darkest White is the story of Craig Kellyâs life, a heartbreaking but extraordinary and inspiring odyssey of a latchkey kid whose athletic prowess and innovations would revolutionize winter sports, take him around the globe, and push him into ever more extreme environments that would ultimately take his life.
It is also a definitive, immersive account of snowboarding and the cultural movement that exploded around it, growing the sport from minor Gen X cult hobby to Olympic centerpiece and a billion-dollar business full of feuds and rivalries.
Finally, The Darkest White is a mesmerizing, cautionary portrait of the mountains, of the allure and the glory they offer, and of the avalanches they unleash with unforgiving fury.
Doors open at 7 p.m.
