Kaleb Barnum shines in First World Cup
Kaleb Barnum from Fernie and a member of the Canadian Ski Cross Team (NEXTGEN), made an impressive debut at the World Cup circuit in Idre Fjall, Sweden. Competing against some of the world’s best, Barnum placed 30th overall, a commendable achievement for his first start on such a prestigious platform.
This milestone comes after a challenging start to the season for Barnum, who overcame significant injuries, including a concussion, torn rotator cuff, and lower back injury sustained in a crash with a Swiss competitor during a European Cup race on February 6 in Les Contamines, France.
Following intensive medical treatment and rehabilitation in Calgary, he returned to the European Cup circuit in Passo San Pellegrino, Italy, on March 8 for six more European Cup races.
Barnum’s determination and resilience paid off as he secured his first Top 10 finish, placing eighth in Reiteralm, Austria on March 18.
On March 27, he qualified in time trials for his World Cup debut in Idre Fjall, Sweden, reaching the Men’s Ski Cross 1/8 Final.
After a tight heat won by Swiss racer Tobias Baur (age 27), advancing with second place finisher Italian Edoardo Zorzi (age 28), Swiss racer Alex Fiva (age 39) and Barnum (age 20) were eliminated.
In a post-race interview, Barnum said, “It felt awesome, and it was so much fun! I’m very grateful for the opportunity to represent Canada.”
Looking ahead, Barnum is set to represent Canada once again as one of six team members participating in the 2025 FIS World Junior Ski Cross Championships in Isola 2000, France, from April 3 to 6.
