Magic of kindness saves merlin

Yesterday afternoon a concerned citizen come across a young merlin in the middle of an intersection in Fernie. There was no obvious injury but it couldn’t fly.

They contacted the Fernie-based BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) through RAPP and when the officer arrived the citizen had picked up the merlin, fearing it would get hurt on the road.

The CO brought the merlin to the Tanglefoot Veterinarian clinic in Fernie. The staff at Tanglefoot gave the hawk a thorough checkup even though it was being a very feisty creature.

They found no injuries but offered to keep the merlin for observation.

“Within a few hours it had recovered its strength and flew away from their yard. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to the Tanglefoot Vet Fernie staff who offered assistance without hesitation, simply to look after a potentially injured animal,” the

BC Conservation Officer Service Facebook page reported.
