Highway 3 re-opened after single fatality collision
On June 20, at approximately 6:15 p.m., a two-vehicle collision occurred at Kubinec Road along Highway 3, approximately 10 km south of Fernie.
The highway was immediately shut down and BC Ambulance, Fernie Fire Department and Elk Valley Regional RCMP officers attended, along with BC Highway Patrol.
Once on scene, one man was located deceased in a dark coloured small car and the woman who had been driving a larger light coloured SUV was taken to Fernie Hospital for treatment and evaluation of her serious injuries.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the event, although weather and road conditions at the time are believed to be a factor in the collision, Elk Valley RCMP reported.
There was no immediate safe detour available.
Highway 3 remained closed for most of the night, with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure along with flaggers supporting the investigation.
The highway is now reopened, dependent upon review by the ministry to restart traffic, which is lined up in both directions for several kilometres.
RCMP continue to investigate the incident.
A further request for information regarding the travel of both vehicles along Highway 3 will be completed once next of kin notification is completed.
Elk Valley RCMP offers their condolences to the family of the deceased driver.
