Fernie Search and Rescue was called out at 12:58 p.m. today (August 7) by BC Ambulance to rescue a kayaker from below the Leap of Faith Falls at Elko.

The kayaker, a young Irish woman who was part of a larger group jumping the falls in their kayaks, landed flat, sustaining a significant lower back injury.

Fernie SAR responded with 12 SAR techs to stabilize and extricate the woman. In view of her injuries and challenging terrain in the canyon, she was moved by via helicopter and taken to the Elk Valley Hospital.
