SAR groups turn out for false activation
Fernie Search and Rescue (SAR), along with Sparwood SAR, responded to an emergency activation of a Garmin InReach PLB Sept. 4.
This started in the Mount Broadwood area, and then travelled through to Leach Ridge and Corbin.
It turned out to be a false activation and the owner was unaware, Fernie SAR reported on social media.
“All activations are treated as emergencies until established as otherwise.
“Users of older devices should be aware that the SOS “lock” does not stop unintended activations if pressure is placed on the outside of the case, even with the lock (highlighted in the photo) in the locked position.
“As such, devices need to be in pockets on the top of packs, and with nothing else around them that can apply pressure,” Fernie SAR explained.
