Serious injuries in early morning crash near Sparwood

On May 12 at 3:15 a.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP along with other emergency services personnel attended to a serious collision along Highway 3 near the intersection of the Hosmer Forest Service Road near Sparwood.

Witnesses report that a small white Nissan four door truck travelling southbound had struck an unloaded white logging truck head on at that location. Investigation revealed that the logging truck was headed northbound along Highway 3 when it made efforts to avoid the small truck, which had crossed the centre line and was fully into the northbound lane, making a collision unavoidable and resulting in serious, life-threatening injuries to the driver of the Nissan truck.

“The driver of the logging truck was not physically injured and remained on scene.  Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be a factor at this time and our investigation is ongoing,” reported S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

The highway was closed for a period of time while RCMP continued to investigate, but it has since been reopened to alternating traffic. There is expected to be further closures for short periods today when the logging truck removal is completed.

BC Ambulance transported the lone occupant and driver of the small pick-up to the Elk Valley Hospital where he was air-lifted to Foothills Hospital near Calgary for further treatment. RCMP are working to contact the family of the Nissan driver.

The logging truck driver was left in the care of co-workers and continues to be supported by RCMP Victim Services.

Elk Valley Regional RCMP is requesting that anyone with any information or dash camera evidence related to this investigation can contact the detachment at 250-425-6233 and speak with an officer. Please refer to file 2025-1317.
