City of Fernie public works crews have contained a sanitary sewer flow that entered the Elk River this afternoon from the storm sewer outfall near 6^th Avenue.

The city was notified of the incident earlier today and took immediate measures to contain the outflow of sanitary sewage, placing absorbent materials around the storm sewer outfall and installing screens to further contain future flows.

At the same time, public works personnel have been working to locate the source of the sewage flow.
