Impaired speeder found with handgun and controlled substance

On August 23 at approximately 8:02 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP was on patrol when an officer noted a Ram truck with a B.C. licence plate travelling at a high rate of speed along Highway 3 just east of Hosmer.

The radar hit at 135 km/h in the 100 km/hr zone. The driver was stopped and subsequently an impaired investigation was initiated due to symptoms displayed by the driver, reported S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

The 21-year-old Sparwood resident failed both Roadside Screening Devices as a result and was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition as a part of that investigation.

“During the stop, the officer noted a good-sized bag in the door well that looked like cocaine, so the driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. A further search of a bag on the passenger seat located a .45 handgun which was loaded with live ammunition,” S/Sgt. Nelsen said.

The suspect, whose name cannot be released as there are currently no charges approved by Crown Counsel against him, was taken to cells and later released on an Appearance Notice for a court appearance in Fernie.

The investigation is ongoing.
