Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the June 18 District of Sparwood council meeting.

HEARINGS

Zoning Bylaw and Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaws

A Public Hearing was held to hear community feedback regarding the proposed amendment bylaws to the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw to allow for three lots to be changed from single-family residential to multi-family residential at 407, 415, and 421 Mountain Ash Crescent. These amendments were later heard at the regular meeting of council and given a third reading. They will now be submitted to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for approval prior to being presented to council for adoption.

Development variance permit for Westwood Subdivision

An informal public hearing was held to hear community feedback regarding a development variance permit for the Westwood Subdivision. The development variance permit was later approved at the regular meeting of council.

PRESENTATIONS

75th Birthday Book Signing

Council recognized George Klemak and Santo Rocca who had or were turning 75 years young this year and invited them to sign the “Birthday Book” and receive a lilac pin. Don Patterson and Irean Van Weele were unable to attend.

BUSINESS

Development Variance Permit for 405 White Birch Crescent

Council has authorized staff to issue notice to affected properties of its intent to consider a development variance permit to vary Section 3.2.2.C.i of Zoning Bylaw 264, 1981, as amended, to decrease the minimum building and structure side yard from 1.52m to 0.91m to build a detached garage at 405 White Birch Crescent. An informal hearing has been scheduled to hear from the public on July 2, prior to consideration.

COMMITTEE-OF-THE-WHOLE

Permissive Tax Exemptions

The current Permissive Tax Exemptions bylaw is expiring at the end of 2024 and the Director of Finance has begun the process of creating a new bylaw with reviewing the current policy. Recommendations from the committee will be implemented and the policy will be brought back at a future date for council’s consideration.

Ice Use Policy

Ice use at the Sparwood Arena is in high demand. There are many local user groups, public citizens and out of town organizations requesting ice time, especially for ‘high demand’ prime ice time, which are mornings, evenings and weekends. Currently we have a Block Ice Booking Policy but there is no policy established to set guidelines regarding the allocation and prioritization of ice time. An Ice Use Policy was discussed and, based on the committee’s feedback, will be developed and brought back to council for further consideration.
