Sparwood launches Parks and Recreation Master Plan

The District of Sparwood has announced the launch of a project that will take an in-depth look into recreation within the community.

This project will be facilitated in collaboration with Upland Planning + Design Studios and the REConsulting Group – consultants who specialize in municipal recreational planning. Information will be gathered from intensive community consultation and a multitude of other areas to form the foundation and creation of Sparwood’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan. This plan will serve as an important document for the district that will prioritize and guide decisions about recreation for the next 10 to 20-years.

Factors that will contribute to the development of the plan will widely range from a technical assessment of recreational resources and structured sports and programming, to the investigation of unstructured recreation which includes fishing, snowmobiling and gardening.

Residents of Sparwood will have multiple opportunities to participate and share their thoughts throughout the consultation period with surveys, interviews, focus groups, youth workshops and drop-in community events occurring primarily between November 4 to 7.

Community involvement is critical for the success of this project to ensure the plan is representative of the specific and unique recreational wants and needs within the community.

Mayor David Wilks

“We are really looking forward to seeing what comes out of this project,” said District of Sparwood Mayor David Wilks. “We encourage everyone to participate in engagement opportunities and share their thoughts and ideas. It is important to note that this plan does not just focus on traditional programs and sports, but also includes popular recreational pursuits like hiking, snowshoeing or snowmobiling,” says Wilks.

Opportunities for engagement will be shared with residents via Sparwood’s official Facebook page on the website www.Sparwood.ca, and in media

Following the public and community group engagements in November, a findings report will be developed with the draft plan and public feedback survey anticipated in the spring. The final plan and project completion will be concluded in June 2020.
