Sparwood opens book of condolences for Tumbler Ridge

The February 10 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, which claimed the lives of 10 people, including the suspected shooter, has prompted the District of Sparwood to establish a book of condolences.

Effective February 11 at 12 p.m., a book of condolences is being placed at the entrance of the District of Sparwood town office for the municipality of Tumbler Ridge and area residents are invited to attend and sign it.

Mayor David Wilks and council this morning made the following announcement:

“We understand that many people who live in Sparwood now, lived in Tumbler Ridge at one time and many attended school there as well.

“We encourage everyone to sign the book of condolences and provide your words. Regardless of where you live in the Elk Valley please show your support.

“Mayor and Council have also instructed staff to lower our flags to half mast to coincide with federal flags being lower for seven days.

“We are two coal mining communities with one heart.”
