Try the Swim to Survive Challenge
Join in at the Sparwood Leisure Centre pool Tuesday, July 18, from 1 – 3 p.m. and try the Swim to Survive Challenge, part of National Drowning Prevention Week.
Did you know 79% of drowning victims in B.C. are male? This is consistent with the national trend in which eight out of 10 fatal drowning victims are male. The majority of drowning deaths are young adults aged 20-34, with 20-24 year olds having the highest death rate of all age groups. (Information from the BC Drowning Report)
The majority of people who drown had no intention of going into the water and most people drown less than 15 metres from safety.
The Lifesaving Society defines the minimum skills needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water, expressed in a skill sequence in Canadian Swim to Survive standard as: Roll into deep water; tread water one minute; swim 50 metres.
The Swim to Survive standard provides key survival skills for those who accidentally fall into the water.
