Wind Phones installed in Elk Valley
Elk Valley Hospice is incredibly proud to announce the installation of three Wind Phones in the Elk Valley.
What is a Wind Phone you ask?
A Wind Phone is an unconnected telephone that offers a quiet, reflective space for those experiencing loss. By picking up the receiver, you’re invited to speak to your loved ones — sharing thoughts, memories, grief, or love — and let those words be carried away on the wind.
Where can you find them?
- Elkford – Boivin Peace Park (set back from the entrance, past the first grove of trees).
- Sparwood – Lions Park (southern end of the paved loop).
- Fernie – Annex Park (near the duck pond).
This project was a true community collaboration and we are incredibly grateful to all the organizations, officials and community members below who made it possible:
- Funding from the Columbia Basin Trust ReDi Grant program and StellerVista Credit Union.
- Support and direction provided by elected officials and staff at the City of Fernie, @districtofsparwood and District of Elkford.
- Guidance provided by Elkford Trails Alliance, Sparwood Trails Alliance and Fernie Trails Alliance – FTAto source potential locations for the phones that were accessible, private and close to a public space.
- Concept design by the talented Erika Hornquist at eHQ design.
Construction by the amazing Sparwood Secondary students, DJ Williamson and Yeha Jang (pictured), with mentorship from their teachers Stephen Larsen and James Lund.
- Installation by local R & K Contracting Services.
- Artwork completed by local artist Erich Stoffels. The Tree of Life inspired artwork on the back of each phone ties directly into the mural Erich completed for the door of the Elk Valley Hospital hospice room, “Whispering Winds.”
We are working on the signage for the hospice room and we look forward to sharing this project with you in the near future.
The Wind Phone originated in Japan and has beautiful and touching history, you can learn me more at mywindphone.com
May these Wind Phones provide a gentle space for connection, healing, memory, and love. May you let your words be carried with the wind.
