Wintery conditions lingering: drive safely

Environment Canada is continuing with its Special Weather Statement for the Elk Valley.

“A storm giving winter weather to much of southern Alberta will also affect southeastern B.C. today. Closer to Alberta, rain is changing to snow. With the temperature hovering just above zero, the snow will be quite wet at times. Local snowfall amounts of two to four cm are forecast before the wet snow tapers off this evening,” Environment Canada reported earlier today.

The continuation of wintery weather has also prompted an alert from Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting.

“It is expected that road temperatures will drop below 0C late tonight into tomorrow morning.  Please use extra caution while driving, watching for black ice and adjusting your speed to the conditions,” Mainroad stated, adding it will “continue to monitor and address concerns as they occur.”

For motorists heading west on Highway 3: Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass stretch. High country travel will likely yield some snow and possible black ice.

Mainroad reminds drivers they must obey winter tire and chain signs throughout the province from October 1 to March 31.
