FireSmart information session Saturday

The Kimberley FireSmart information session is scheduled for March 30 at Centennial Centre (100 4th avenue) from 11 am. To 2 p.m.

The information session will include: ways to making your home more fire resilient; ways to get the neighbourhood involved; and support coming from the city.

Members of the Kimberley Fire Department will be on hand to answer questions about FireSmart with the goal of becoming a more fire resilient community. The info session will include fire truck tours and a barbecue.

The 2011 wildfire that burned into Slave Lake, Alta. destroyed 428 single family dwellings and scores of other structures. It resulted in nearly $1 billion in direct costs and at least $300 million in other economic costs. During that same week, the Province of Alberta fought 188 other wildfires that threatened more than 22 other communities.

Last summer the Meachen Creek wildfire threatened the City of Kimberley and had the city on evacuation alert. This near miss is a harsh reminder of the growing threat a wildland urban interface fire may have on our community.

This is why the City of Kimberley Fire Department is pleased to have this opportunity to network with a variety of people who can influence how safe our communities can become wildfire.
