Groundwater rising due to ice buildup on Mark Creek

Due to the recent cold weather, sections of Mark Creek through Kimberley are experiencing ice buildup that is resulting in higher than normal creek levels and therefore rising groundwater levels, the City of Kimberley reported this afternoon.

The city says it has received reports that some residents in low-lying areas adjacent to the creek have detected water seeping into their basements.

“This is the result of rising groundwater, which is beyond the control of the city. It is recommended that residents have sump pumps on hand to contend with any water ingress issues,” the city stated.

“City crews will continue to monitor the level of Mark Creek and will take action if deemed necessary. The city is not authorized to undertake any work in the creek unless there is imminent danger of it breaching its banks,” it explained.

If anyone witnesses water coming over the creek banks they are asked to contact the city.

It is expected that with the arrival of warmer weather early next week the water level will begin to drop.
