Kimberley Arts Council presents annual awards

By Michelle Forbes

Kimberley has long been known as a city that loves the arts. From First Saturday initiatives to festivals, to individuals who work to give more musical and artistic opportunities to the community, there are those who help to make Kimberley what it is, and the Kimberley Arts Council takes the opportunity each year to recognize individuals and a business that help bring these opportunities to Kimberley.

On Tuesday, March 6, at Centre 64, the Kimberley Arts Council held its annual Awards Gala and AGM. Many members of the arts community were there, along with recipients and representatives from city hall, Councillor Sandra Roberts, and Mayor Don McCormick, to honour the award recipients.

Outgoing Arts Council President Mike Redfern (above pictured right) was on hand to present the awards, and he invited Mayor McCormick to speak about the accomplishments and contributions of the first award recipient, The Kimberley City Bakery.

The mayor spoke of The Kimberley City Bakery’s contributions to the community, both as a business and for their contribution in putting on the Kimberley City Bakery Medieval Festival year after year.

Michelle Forbes received the award for Arts and Culture Award for Business or Organization. The Kimberley City Bakery Medieval Festival is a highly anticipated event each year, and is set for its final year by the current organizers on July 14 and 15 at the Coronation Park Baseball Diamond next to Centennial Hall.

Sven Heyde, music teacher at Selkirk Secondary school, was awarded the Individual Arts & Culture Award in recognition of his outstanding and continuous contribution to the performing arts in Kimberley, as he has helped to teach his students music, band, and choir, and has dedicated his time to teaching students in both McKim and Selkirk, and bringing more music to the community. Some of his students were in attendance.

The award that includes a scholarship award is the Goolden Piano Award, awarded by the Kimberley Arts Council in memory of the late Mrs. Goolden, a huge supporter of the arts, and one of the generous supporters who helped fund the purchase of Centre 64’s Grand piano.

After her passing, the Kimberley Arts council continued her work of offering an award to a deserving recipient. This year’s recipient, Micah Meuleman, will be taking his Grade 10 piano exam in April, having completed the harmony and history components. In addition to playing in the Selkirk concert and jazz bands, he also plays the piano at Key City Theatre to welcome guests to concerts, as well as performing in the Kootenay Performing Arts Festival.

A huge congratulations to all of the award recipients, who have worked so hard to share music, and the performing arts with the Kootenays to make our community a better place!
