Kimberley works to meet target emissions reduction goals
The 2018 CARIP report issued by City of Kimberley staff in late May outlines significant improvements by the city towards its 2020 emissions reduction goals. The released report summarizes actions taken in 2018 to reduce corporate and community-wide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and reports on progress towards achieving carbon neutrality.

The Official Community Plan includes a target of a 33% reduction in Corporate GHG emissions over the 2007 baseline by 2020 and supports initiatives to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions by 6% from 2007 levels by 2020. In 2018, the total annual corporate emissions were 1,184 tCO2e, representing a 5.4% reduction from the previous year and a total 21.6% reduction from the 2007 baseline.
“We’re proud of the reduction we have seen to the city’s corporate emissions to date;” said Scott Sommerville, Chief Administrative Officer with the City of Kimberley. “We feel confident that we will meet our 2020 goal of a total 33% emissions reduction. I do hope the work that we are doing will inspire residents to find ways to reduce their own carbon footprint. It’s as easy as riding your bike to work, walking to the store, or composting at home.”
The report also outlines actions being taken by the city to meet or exceed the 33% goal including the installation of two Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, one at City Hall and one at the Platzl. Other initiatives include the acquisition of an Electric Vehicle for use by Kimberley’s Bylaw Officer; installation of solar panels at the Aquatic Centre; increasing the number of shade trees in our parks; and the replacement of water mains in areas throughout the city.
The attached chart outlines progress to date. To find out all of the ways the City of Kimberley is working to meet the 33% goal, residents can view the entire report on the City of Kimberley website through this link.
