Logging underway in Meadowbrook
Logging to mitigate the likelihood and severity of wildfires is underway in Meadowbrook. Cutting on the first block south of the old McGinty Trail across Highway 95A from the Rocky Mountain Riders’ riding ring on Thomason Road commenced on January 25.
The next cut block to be logged lies east of that area towards McGinty Lake.
The Meadowbrook Community Association (MCA) recognizes the need for the logging but expects it to be planned and conducted in accordance with sound science and best forest management practices. To this end, representatives of the MCA have had productive meetings with Nick McRae of Canfor, Aaron Canuel of the Ministry of the Environment, and the contractor, Clint Lightburn.
The MCA is pleased to report that the plans call for:
- intentional spacing of stems from 40 to 70 per hectare;
- due care around sensitive spots such as ponds and trails;
- logging while the ground is frozen;
- reasonable care with respect to skidding;
- appropriate regeneration and decommissioning of roads;
- waste to be removed for fuel or chipped.
MCA representatives will be monitoring the situation and meeting with the contractor to discuss any issues.
Currently, the work area is not closed to the public but other users are urged to use caution while in the vicinity.
If anyone visits the areas and has concerns, please notify MCA Director Marty Musser at 250-427-1748 or [email protected].
