Preventing Sewer Blockages
Do you know where it goes after you flush it down? Non-flushable materials can snag or bind together and become large enough to cause a blockage that may affect your house, or several homes along the line, preventing water from draining away. Here are a few ‘Dos’ and ‘Don’ts’ to follow for preventing blockages:
DO:
Dispose of all plastic or non-flushable paper materials in the garbage.
Scrape kitchen grease into the garbage before washing dishes.
Avoid releasing hair down the drain.
DON’T:
Don’t flush cleaning wipes diapers, or personal sanitary products.
Don’t flush rags, cloth, paper towels, or newsprint.
Don’t flush kitchen grease, oils, or other hazardous materials.

Garbage Cans Need Lids
Why does your garbage can need a tight-fitting lid? There is a link between animals eating garbage and animal aggression towards humans. When we reduce the risk of animals getting into our garbage, we reduce the risk of an animal becoming a nuisance or aggressive. Please ensure your garbage is stored in garbage can with a tight fitting lid and in a way to prevent animals from accessing it. (Bylaw No. 2520, 2015, Sect. 4.4). Visit https://www.kimberley.ca/services/garbage to learn more about Solid Waste Collection.
With the weather warming up, the Bylaw officer would like to remind people not to leave your pets in vehicles. Animals confined in an unventilated vehicle can quickly succumb to the high temperatures and die of heat stroke. Please leave your animals at home where they will be more comfortable. The MTI Bylaw 2540, Animal Control Schedule Section 10, allows for a $150 fine for animals left in an enclosed space unventilated vehicle. Let’s keep our dogs safe this summer!
Building Permits & Inspections
Planning a renovation or addition to your home? Dreaming of a new deck or garage? Remember to first obtain a Building Permit before starting your project. The permit and inspection process helps to ensure compliance with health, safety and zoning requirements. Building Permit application forms may be obtained at City Hall or the website. The Building Inspector can help you navigate the application process and discuss the relevant building code and other municipal requirements. If you have questions about the permit and inspection process, please contact the Building Inspector at 250-427-9655 or [email protected].
