Notes from City Hall
Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Community Initiatives & Affected Areas Program Funding
Each year, the Regional District of East Kootenay, under the direction of the Columbia Basin Trust, supports projects identified as priorities within individual communities. The programs are designed to help address the needs of Basin communities and incorporate community-based funding decisions (by council) to better meet local priorities. Applications are due to the RDEK by 2 p.m. on January 22. Late applications will not be accepted. Please visit HERE for more information.
Snow Hauling
Please give City of Kimberley staff room to operate during snow removal. In areas where snow piles are to be hauled away, the city will post temporary ‘No Parking’ signs in the afternoon the day before snow hauling commences. Vehicles will be towed if they do not comply with the signage. City crews are working as quickly as possible to clear the streets, while following the city’s Snow and Ice Management Plan.
We would like to remind residents of the dangers of children sliding on or playing in snow piles that accumulate from plowing and scraping the roads, especially the ones around Mark Creek. The water moves quickly in the creek and the ice is always changing, creating a dangerous area. The snow is often heavy and full of ice chunks, which can also cause injury. Please remind your children that these snow piles are not a safe place to be playing.
Preventing Frozen Water Pipes
Did you know that frost sinks lower as the air temperature climbs higher? Now is the time to take action to prevent frozen water pipes. If the water service line to your home has ever frozen or you have noticed a reduced water flow in your home during the winter, leave one tap running cold water day and night (stream should be the size of a pencil).
This will help to prevent your lines from freezing. Since frost sinks deeper into the ground when air temperatures rise after a period of extreme cold, you will need to keep the water running 24/7 until the end of March to avoid having the line freeze.
The city encourages residents who have experienced frozen water service lines in the past to be pro-active; ensure indoor lines are properly insulated; keep a good snow cover over the ground above the service lines; and install a bleeder line system in your home or business. Stop by the Operations desk for your free bleeder fitting while supplies last. Click here for more information.
BBQ Fire Pits
As of December 31 all back yard BBQ pit permits have expired. The rules and regulations are regulated by ‘Schedule A’ of our Open Burning Bylaw, which can be viewed on our website. To renew or obtain a permit, please contact the Kimberley Fire Department at 250-427-4114 or [email protected].
