Notes from City Hall
Feeding Deer
The City of Kimberley’s Bylaw Officer has been receiving several complaints of residents feeding deer in residential neighbourhoods.
Did you know this is in contravention of the City of Kimberley Deer Feeding Bylaw No. 2296, 2006? Fines up to $500 can be issued to anyone caught feeding deer. Deer are often left foods that are unhealthy for their diets. This causes harm to the deer and leads to digestive upset, and potentially even death. To report someone feeding the deer, please call our Bylaw Officer at 250-427-6460 or email [email protected]. View the full bylaw.
The Scoop about Pet Waste
If you are disposing of pet waste, please remember to place it in securely tied, double plastic bags (i.e. pet waste bags or shopping bags) before putting it in the larger bag contained inside your garbage bin. This will help ensure the safety of our Solid Waste Collection Operators and is a requirement pursuant to section 5.3 of the City of Kimberley Solid Waste Regulations & Rates Bylaw No. 2520.
This year the clean-up starts on May 7 and ends on May 18. Based on your usual garbage day, yard waste goes out on: Mondays: May 7 or 14, Tuesdays: May 8 or 15, Wednesdays: May 9 or 16, Thursdays: May 10 or 17, or Fridays: May 11 or 18. If you have any questions, including what city workers will pick-up, please call Operations at 250-427-9660 or visit this link.
Cemetery Caretaking
The Parks Department kindly reminds anyone placing floral offerings on grave spaces that, except immediately after interment, the following conditions will apply:
- Flowers only. Natural or artificial may be placed in grave space containers, provided the container is part of the memorial. Flowers placed on grave spaces may be removed by city staff while performing maintenance duties. Flowers will be disposed of at the discretion of city staff when the condition of the flowers is considered detrimental to the beauty of the cemetery.
- Floral offerings, wreaths, or ornamental monuments may be placed at the grave space, provided they are free standing and are not staked into the ground. If they are staked into the ground, they will be removed by city staff and disposed of.
- The use of wood, glass, porcelain, pottery, or other breakable containers, either above or below the ground is prohibited.
Creek Water Level Warning
Be advised that water levels can change rapidly, and are especially high during spring run-off. Flows are extremely fast when water levels are high and present an extreme danger to anyone falling in the creek. Please stay clear of the creeks during periods of high flow.
Sidewalk Cafe Licenses
It’s that time of year to submit a renewal agreement for Downtown Sidewalk Café Patios. Forms can be found on the city’s website or are available for pick up at City Hall front reception area. If you are thinking about installing a sidewalk patio for your downtown restaurant please contact [email protected] for more information.
Tax Relief for Businesses
The ‘Kimberley Investment Incentive Program’ provides opportunities for municipal tax exemption to encourage investment and upgrades to commercial and industrial properties. The program provides tax relief, for a specified term, from 100% of the increase in the municipal portion of property taxes resulting from the increased property value after a commercial, mixed residential-commercial, or industrial project is completed. Brownfield projects are also eligible for relief from 100% of the municipal portion of property taxes while a project involving environmental investigation or remediation activity is in progress. Visit our website or contact the Planning Department at 250-427-9665 or [email protected] for more details.
