Notes from City Hall

Property Tax Deadline

Property Tax Notices have been mailed to all City of Kimberley property owners on record. The deadline for payment of your 2018 property taxes is July 3 at 4:45 p.m., after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current year taxes. If you haven’t received your Tax Notice by the end of May, please contact City Hall at 250-427-5311 or [email protected] and request that a copy be forwarded to you.

Payment of your property taxes can be made by mail, in person at City Hall, by phone or Internet banking, or in person through most financial institutions. Cheques post-dated to July 3, will be accepted at City Hall in advance of the deadline. If paying by mail or electronic methods, please allow time for your payment to arrive by the deadline. Post marks on mailed remittances will not be considered as date of payment. Receipt of electronic payments will be recorded as of the date and time the funds are posted to the city’s bank account and not when the payment is transmitted by your financial institution.

Please remember to either complete the Home Owner Grant application that is attached to the bottom of the Tax Notice and remit it to City Hall, or complete the online application to claim the Grant. A 10% penalty will apply to Home Owner Grant amounts not claimed by the July 3 Property Tax deadline.

Mandatory Water Restrictions

Did you know that the city has a bylaw in response to potential water shortages?

Section 3.2 of the ‘Water Shortage Response Bylaw No. 2527’ states: “If no restriction stage is in force on June 1st of any year, stage 1 restrictions come into force automatically on that date without prior declaration.”  As of Friday, June 1 the following became mandatory:

  • If your residential property has an EVEN address, you are permitted only to water your lawn on EVEN days during the stage 1 restrictions. Example: 122 Main Street can water on the second, fourth, sixth, etc., day of the month.
  • If your residential property has an ODD address, you are permitted only to water your lawn on ODD days during the stage 1 restrictions. Example: 123 Main Street can water on the first, third, fifth, etc., day of the month.
  • During Stage 1 restrictions, homes are permitted to water ONLY between the hours of 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Non-residential properties follow a different schedule which can be found in ‘Schedule A’ of Bylaw No. 2527.
  • Hand-watering of plants or gardens, using a hose to wash surfaces (vehicles, sidewalks, etc.) is ONLY permitted if the hose is equipped with an automatic shut-off device.
  • If you are planting a new lawn (seed or sod), please contact Operations to discuss how to obtain a permit for watering outside of the allowable dates and times.

To view the full bylaw, please visit our website. For any questions relating to watering restrictions, please call our Operations Department at 250-427-9660.

Platzl Flowerbeds

The flowerbeds in the Platzl add colour and vibrancy to the downtown core. Please do not allow your children to play in the flowerbeds and please refrain from letting dogs use the beds as washrooms.

NorthStar Rails-to-Trails

Morning, afternoon or evening…the time is right to get out and enjoy this great trail connecting Kimberley and Cranbrook! Trail Maps and more info available at www.northstarrailtrail.com and also on Facebook. To report an issue with the condition of the trail, please contact: 250-427-9660 (Kimberley) or 250-489-0218 (Cranbrook).

Please watch for protective female deer (does) around the city

The Animal Control/Bylaw Enforcement Officer is responding by placing signboards in neighbourhoods to warn of deer in the area. Please respect their space, stay back 15 to 20 metres, and do not approach. They will often leave their fawn from time to time in search of food; please do not feed the fawn or attempt to remove, touch or pick up the fawn for fear of abandonment.

To learn more about what to do if you encounter deer, please visit the city’s website.
