Cemetery caretaking
The Parks Department kindly reminds anyone placing floral offerings on grave spaces that, except immediately after interment, the following conditions will apply:
1. Flowers only. Natural or artificial may be placed in grave space containers, provided the container is part of the memorial. Flowers placed on grave spaces may be removed by city staff while performing maintenance duties. Flowers will be disposed of at the discretion of city staff when the condition of the flowers is considered detrimental to the beauty of the cemetery.
2. Floral offerings, wreaths, or ornamental monuments may be placed at the grave space, provided they are free standing and are not staked into the ground. If they are staked into the ground, they will be removed by city staff and disposed of.
3. The use of wood, glass, porcelain, pottery, or other breakable containers, either above or below the ground is prohibited.
Sewer Jet Cleaning
The city will be performing their Sewer Jet Cleaning program over the summer and fall. Jet Cleaning (or hydro jetting) cleans sewer pipes through the use of high-intensity water. It helps to cut through grease and debris and lessens the potential for sewer backups in the city’s main lines. City bylaws require that backwater valves be installed in order to prevent sewer backflows and any issues that may occur due to maintenance of sewer lines. A backwater valve allows water to escape from the cleanout but will prevent flows or materials from backing up into a home. “Blowbacks” can occur in some homes during the sewer jet cleaning process. The installation of a backwater valve (backflow prevention device) will prevent blowbacks. A certified plumber will be able to suggest installation solutions. Please ensure that your home is protected!
Building Permits & Inspections
Planning a renovation or addition to your home? Dreaming of a new deck or garage? Remember to first obtain a Building Permit before starting your project. The permit and inspection process helps to ensure compliance with health, safety and zoning requirements. Building permit application forms may be obtained at City Hall or the website. The Building Inspector can help you navigate the application process and discuss the relevant building code and other municipal requirements. If you have questions about the permit and inspection process, please contact the Building Inspector at 250-427-9655 or [email protected].
