Notes from City Hall

Brownbag Lunch with Mayor McCormick and CAO Sommerville

On Wednesday, March 13, and on the second Wednesday of each month, City of Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick will host a brown-bag luncheon at City Hall from noon until 1:30 p.m. Bring your own lunch and have a discussion with the mayor and chief administrative officer Scott Sommerville.

Preventing Frozen Water and Sewer Service Lines

If the water service line to your home has ever frozen or you have noticed a reduced water flow in your home during the winter, leave one tap running cold water day and night (stream should be the size of a pencil). This will help to prevent your lines from freezing.  Since frost sinks deeper into the ground when air temperatures rise after a period of extreme cold, you will need to keep the water running 24/7 until mid-April to avoid having the line freeze.

The city encourages residents who have experienced frozen water service lines in the past to be pro-active by ensuring indoor lines are properly insulated, keeping a good snow cover over the ground above the service lines and installing a bleeder line system to maintain a flow in your water service. Flowing water is significantly less likely to freeze.

Your sewer line is also at risk of freezing. If you notice the water in your sink or bathtub draining slower than usual, please run hot water down your drain to see if drain flow improves. If it does, continue to run hot water down your drain several times a day (filling a bathtub one quarter full of hot water and releasing it is a good method, this provides control of the released water) until the weather changes and the frost has come out of the ground, typically in mid-April.  If hot water does not improve the flow, contact a plumber.

Community Outdoor Revitalization Grant Program

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) has recently announced a Community Outdoor Revitalization Grant program.  The city is seeking to identify an outdoor area and ideas to prioritize for the grant application.

The outdoor space should be one that creates opportunities for our community to interact and gather, and/or upgrades the aesthetics of a space.  CBT hopes that their investment will enhance community pride, support a culture of civic engagement, and create a draw for tourism, business retention, and expansion.

More information can be found HERE.

Please send your ideas to Scott at [email protected]  These ideas will be compiled and presented to city council.
