Notes from City Hall
Wildfires, What Can You Do to Be Prepared?
Many wildfires in B.C. occur far from cities and towns, but sometimes they threaten homes, businesses and infrastructure. Help keep your family safe by preparing in advance for a potential evacuation alert or order. Develop a household plan, put together your emergency kit, and connect with your neighbours. Please note the following Evacuation Stages information and keep them top of mind in the event of a wildfire threat.
Stage 1 – EVACUATION ALERT – Prepare & Be Ready
Residents are advised of the potential need for evacuation. The alert highlights the nature of the danger and that evacuation may be required at any time. Information will be provided on where to go if the evacuation is ordered. Residents should prepare to evacuate and gather personal supplies necessary for several days.
STAGE 2 – EVACUATION ORDER: Leave
People in the affected area are ordered to leave. Residents will be provided with information on where to go. Once evacuated you are not permitted to return until the order has been rescinded. If you were outside of the boundary before the evacuation order was placed, you cannot enter. Be sure that you are prepared before leaving the area.
STAGE 3 – EVACUATION RESCIND: Return
Those evacuated from the affected area are advised that the emergency is under control and that the area has been declared safe for return.
In the event of an Evacuation Alert or Evacuation order, various methods will be used to advise residents including: door-to-door canvasing, the City of Kimberley website at www.kimberley.ca, local media, and social media. ‘Like’ our Facebook page to ensure you see the notices.
Boulevards
The Operations Department would like to remind residents that in accordance with the “City of Kimberley Streets and Traffic Bylaw No. 1877, 1995”, it is your responsibility to look after your Boulevard. A person being the owner or occupier of land shall:
508.1: cut grass and weeds on the boulevard abutting that person’s property; and
508.2: keep in good repair and up to City standards, driveways crossing the boulevard abutting that person’s property.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact Operations at 250.427.9660 or [email protected].
Hot Pets? Not Cool!
On these hot summer days, the Bylaw officer would like to remind people not to leave your pets in vehicles. The temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with partly opened windows, can rapidly reach a level high enough to seriously harm or even kill your pet. Please leave your animals at home where they will be more comfortable. The MTI Bylaw No. 2540, Animal Control Schedule Section 10, allows for a $150 fine for animals left in an enclosed space unventilated vehicle. Let’s keep our dogs safe this summer!
