Self-storage zoning changes approved
By Nowell Berg
City of Kimberley council held its regular bi-monthly meeting on Sept. 25.
Councillors Kevin Dunnebacke, Woody Maguire, Jason McBain, Sandra Roberts and Steven Royer were present along with Mayor Don McCormick. Coun. Sue Cairns was absent from chambers, but available by video link.
An archive of the meeting can be found on the City of Kimberley YouTube channel.
Storage Zoning Public Hearing
Mayor McCormick opened the public hearing into self-storage zoning changes.
Starting off the hearing, Troy Pollock, Manager of Planning and Sustainability, told council the bylaw entailed “text amendments to the light industrial M2 zone that would allow self-storage as a permitted use.”
Only one online comment was made. Jean Terpsma said, “We support the amendment.”
Pollock also noted that council received two written submissions, both spoke to general concerns regarding increased traffic and resulting noise from industrial development.
After the public hearing, council unanimously approved the bylaw amendment and zoning change.
RCMP Personnel Authorization
Council voted to approve the issuing of a letter to the RCMP outlining the city’s request for staffing in the municipal police unit.
Historically, the city requests and budgets for eight FTE (full time equivalent) officers, but makes a request of the local detachment commander to manage policing with seven FTE officers.
Corporate Officer, Maryse Leroux, told council that Sgt. Steve Woodcox, local detachment commander, felt he could manage with seven FTE but they, the city and RCMP, “would look at it closely as the year progressed.”
Leroux indicated that adding one FTE officer to the force would require a 1.5% increase in the property tax to raise the necessary funds.
Mayor McCormick noted that the total annual cost of municipal policing is “a shade under $1.4 million dollars.”
Currently, the city’s share of policing costs is 70% and the Federal Government picks up the remaining 30%.
Liaison Appointments
Council approved the liaison appointments with the Kimberley Chamber of Commerce and the Nature Park Society.
Coun. McQuire will handle liaison duties with the chamber, and Coun. Cairns accepted the appointment to work with the Nature Park Society.
Both terms end in October 2026.
Kimberley city council meets twice monthly starting at 7 p.m. The next regular council meeting: October 10.
