Discover Your Inner Illustrator
Everyone can draw! In this engaging workshop, Petra will break down the drawing process into simple techniques, helping participants apply proportions, shading, and textures. She will also share how her daily illustrated journaling practice has enriched her life.
Participants are encouraged to bring an image—printed or on their phone—for their final drawing. Whether it’s a beloved landscape, a pet, or a cherished home, this workshop will help capture it on paper. Sample images will be available for those who do not bring their own. While all drawing materials are included, participants are welcome to bring their own favourite art supplies, including watercolour paints (although watercolour techniques will not be covered in the session, they can be applied).
About Petra Hekkenberg
“In love with nature, Petra moved to New Denver in 2015. She currently works locally as a freelance designer and artist and part-time at Kokanee Glacier Cabin as a hut keeper. As her love for the mountains quickly grew, so did her inspiration to capture the beauty all around through photography, video and drawing. In 2021 Petra decided to draw and journal every day during her multi-week work shifts up in beautiful Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park.
In 2022 she self-published the resulting journal under the title “In the Alpine” and in 2024 she published the second illustrated journal ‘Further in The Alpine.’ Through these illustrated journals her art journey continues in the form of greeting cards, commissioned pieces, presentations and facilitating workshops. From 2021 till end 2024 she volunteered as a board member of the Slocan Lake Arts Council, where she, till this date, coordinates events, and hosts workshops. Petra recently stepped away from the board to free up more time for her own growing art career.
Petra’s passion for the arts came to her at a young age; she already joined adult drawing classes at the age of 10! Rather than continuing to an Art Academy, she decided to get her Bachelor of Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. This international school taught her conceptual thinking, storytelling, personal development, and explored working in a range of different materials. Although it hasn’t been the focus of her career, Petra has applied her design degree in a wide mix of public space design and community projects, including the design and construction of several playgrounds in Namibia, Africa.
