Speed Watch wraps up another year
Feedback from local government and residents indicate traffic safety is a concern. As a result of this input, traffic safety is a strategic priority for the Kimberley RCMP, reported Sgt. Chris Newel.

Ongoing enforcement action by police is one avenue and the use of Speed Watch is another, he noted.
“Education and awareness is the goal of our Speed Watch group. They monitor speed at locations identified by the police, government and/or local residents. By checking and recording the speed of vehicles police can determine if further enforcement action is necessary. At the same time drivers are made aware of their speed,” he explained.
Between April and October, Speed Watch set up 27 times. Over that period over 6,200 vehicles went through and the speeds were recorded.
Less than 10% of those vehicles were exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h.
“We would like to express our thanks to the Speed Watch volunteers who put in 118 hours to promote traffic safety in our community,” said Sgt. Newel, Kimberley RCMP Detachment commander.
