The step next to the void
Nearing end of October, my girlfriend Julie and I were driving along St. Mary’s Road, looking for photographs. As we drove past this huge rock, (I have since learned it is called the St. Mary’s crag), I noticed some climbers on it. So we made a u-turn and pulled up.
Marc Crawford was already at the top; he seemed to be driving a spike into the rock. Shortly afterwards another climber, Ryan Tarves – a local legend in rock climbing circles – started up. I’ve never actually seen rock climbing, except on tv. Watching Ryan skillfully maneuver up the rock was quite entertaining. Later, as I looked at the pictures I had taken, I kept asking myself, ‘what the hell is he stepping on?’
