What do you think of bus service to Cranbrook?
Public engagement will begin in Kimberley on Feb. 20 to discuss a proposed commuter service to Cranbrook.
“Accessible and convenient public transit is a pillar for strong, sustainable communities. That’s why the province is committed to investing in transit service that meets the unique needs of the community it serves. This public consultation is the first step in a positive direction,” said B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.
The engagement will focus on a proposal to introduce over 1,000 additional hours to the Kimberley system, and specifically to explore adding a morning and afternoon commuter service to Cranbrook from Kimberley.
There will be an online survey to provide input at bctransit.com/Kimberley/survey. People can also get a paper copy of the survey at the City of Kimberley office.
“Creating a dedicated, twice-daily route from Kimberley to Cranbrook is something we have heard many requests for,” said City of Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick. “I am excited about this possibility, and look forward to reviewing the results of the upcoming survey.”
Investment for the proposed additional service is provided by the province and City of Kimberley. The province is providing $12.7 million in funding for transit expansion initiatives across the province over the next three years, including this proposed expansion in Kimberley.
“Providing opportunities for public input allows us to better assess demand for expanded transit service between Kimberley and Cranbrook,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit president and chief executive officer. “The results of the engagement process will allow us to connect people and communities more effectively and efficiently.”
The transit system in Kimberley provides approximately 17,000 passenger trips annually, BC Transit reported.
