New multi-purpose centre announced for ʔAkisq̓nuknik

ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation (ʔAFN) is pleased to announce its approval to construct a new multi-purpose centre, comprised of a new health centre, band hall and renovated administration building.

Once completed, the centre will provide a state of the art and culturally relevant facility for ʔAkisq̓nuknik to gather, hold ceremony, and receive services.

Its centrepiece will be the gathering place, a large open space for community events. Adorned with natural features and a depiction of the river tributaries which define ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa inlaid the floor, the gathering place will include a commercial grade kitchen for community feasts and traditional food preservation activities.

“This endeavour isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about weaving dreams, preserving heritage, and shaping a brighter tomorrow. Encapsulated in the design is our past, present and future. Our dedicated staff will find more than an office, they will be embraced by the aesthetic reflections of our community and find inspiration and purpose in their daily work life. The updated services, with an emphasis on our Elders, is promising to enhance the quality of life for all ʔAkisq̓nuknik (People). Their well-being will be nurtured within these walls, a testament to the commitment of the ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation to its people,” said Chief Donald Sam.

Construction is expected to start this summer and be completed by fall/winter 2025. During the construction period, all member and health services will be provided out of ʔAFN’s existing health centre and recreation centre offices.

ʔAFN is also finalizing plans to locate some staff in nearby Invermere.
