Five locals off to North American Indigenous Games

A contingent of five Ktunaxa athletes are on their way to compete in the 2017 North American Indigenous Games being held in Toronto from July 16 to the 23.

The Ktunaxa athletes are Carter Basil-Pelly and Trent Walkley (swimming), Justin Grosso (volleyball), Hana Braker (softball) and Caytlin Luke (golf).

“The entire Ktunaxa Nation is very proud of our young athletes as they begin their journey to the North America Indigenous Games in Toronto,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair. “The competition will be tough, but I know how hard these five young people have trained and practiced. Carter, Trent, Justin, Hana and Caytlin are outstanding role models not just to other Ktunaxa youth, but all Ktunaxa people. I am looking forward to hearing about their experiences at the games once they are home.”

The North American Indigenous Games are a multi-sport, multi-disciplinary event involving Indigenous youth from Canada and the United States.

The games also feature a vibrant cultural program showcasing local and North American indigenous cultural groups. First held in Edmonton in 1990, the games have been staged on seven other occasions since then.
