Standing for free speech
Letter to the Editor
A clarification for your readers: ʔaq̓am Chief and Council represent one Ktunaxa community. They do not speak for all Ktunaxa leadership, and their statement on the Key City Theatre matter should be understood in that context.
The Ktunaxa Nation Council is a collective of member First Nations. Each community governs independently. No single Chief and Council holds authority to represent the nation as a whole on matters like this.
I will be direct about where I stand. I am an advocate for free speech. Comedy, humour, and the right to laugh are not things any leadership should control. That position does not change based on who the comedian is or who takes offense. The moment we begin deciding which voices are acceptable in public spaces, we have entered territory far more dangerous than any joke.
Ktunaxa peoples have survived genuine attempts to silence us. I do not believe the answer to that history is to become people who silence others.
