Get started planting with local seed and advice

Join Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook and the Kimberley Edible Gardens Group as they host the fourth annual Seedy Saturday on Saturday March 18 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Kimberley Public Library.

By dropping in to the library for this free event, beginners through to avid gardeners will be able to access seeds and information pertinent to the local growing area. Participants will be able to borrow seeds from the library seed catalogue, swap seeds, learn from fellow gardeners, and provide insight to others.

Seed swaps similar to Seedy Saturday occur across the country as people strive to maintain seed biodiversity. These events bring gardeners together to learn more about what grows best in our wide ranging growing regions and what varieties perform best.

As main volunteer organizer Chris Vassallo states: “the saving of seeds is as old as civilization itself” and a valuable practice in our community of growers.

Seedy Saturday is free to attend anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on a drop-in basis.

Dirk de Geus, the local Wildsight Food Sustainability Coordinator, will be on hand during those times to orient people with the seed library, answer questions and discuss gardening.
