City still discussing lacrosse box
The Cranbrook Outdoor Arena Project Committee will have to wait another couple of weeks before they receive a definitive answer from City of Cranbrook council regarding a proposal to construct a lacrosse box adjacent to the skateboard park.
Council March 5 agreed with a city administration recommendation to allow for more time in order for a report to be prepared concerning the outdoor arena proposal, which Outdoor Arena Committee chair Ron Miles notes would be constructed “adjacent to the skateboard park and what was formerly used as a ball diamond.”
Miles appeared before city council Feb. 20 to present the plans for the lacrosse box, which would be used by Cranbrook Junior Lacrosse players, with an eye on growing the sport in the Key City.
“I’m still surprised we don’t have an outdoor facility,” he said, as someone coming from Victoria originally.
The rink would be used for lacrosse, but could also be flooded for skating/hockey, Miles said.
“The challenge has really been trying to pin down a spot to put it” and not raising money, he added.
In a Feb. 23 letter to council, Miles noted a preferred location and reminded the city that no financial support is being sought.
“We are presently meeting with a local service club which has expressed interest in spearheading the project. As mentioned at the delegation, we are not seeking any financial support from the City of Cranbrook. We do have some further funds to raise in order to complete the project; however, we do not anticipate any difficulty in finalizing those efforts,” he stated.
Should approval be received to go ahead with the facility, Miles said, “we should be in a position to break ground in three to six months.”
Committee members hope to have the rink built in time for the next lacrosse season (April to July).
Boards have already been purchased and between $65,000 and $70,000 has been raised so far, Miles told council Feb. 20, before being requested to submit a formal letter to the city, which was done three days later. A further $40,000 (estimated) is still to be raised for the project.
