Cranbrook Pro Rodeo celebrates 25th year

It’s always the rootingest and tootingest time of the year, and it has been for a quarter of a century now.

The Cranbrook Pro Rodeo’s 25th year was just as fine as previous years and then some, August 19-21 at the Wycliffe Rodeo Grounds north of Cranbrook.

Hard driving cowboy action was again the centerpiece of the weekend activities, as rodeo pros from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nevada, Montana, Utah and other bronc bustin’ and bull ridin’ locales made Cranbrook a stop on their busy summer schedules. Creating a sense of urgency to the cowboys’ schedule is the fact the Lethbridge and Pincher Creek rodeos run the same weekend.

But that didn’t take away from the Cranbrook Rodeo as action on Friday, August 19, designated as Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day, serving as a fundraiser in the battle against cancer. Nor did it dent the Saturday evening event, complete with the annual barbecue dinner and dance.

And the Sunday afternoon action was picture perfect, with a hot sun beating down on the dusty trail riders as they competed in saddle bronc, steer wrestling, calf roping, barrel racing and bull riding.
Once again Wes Cummings kept the action connected and fans up-to-date as the rodeo announcer and trick riders Cassie Horner and Shelby Cummings thrilled with their daring and acrobatic skills.

New to the rodeo this year was the boys’ Steer Riding and Cranbrook lad Riley Claypool thrilled the packed grandstand with his gutsy ride.

Cranbrook Rodeo is part of both the Duane Daines Saddle Bronc Series and the Kenton Randle Bareback Series.
