ICE add 18-year-old defender
Kootenay ICE General Manager Jeff Chynoweth addressed a need for his club approaching the WHL Trade Deadline (Jan. 10) by acquiring 18-year-old defenseman Tyler King from the Spokane Chiefs today (Dec. 31).
Chynoweth exchanged 16-year-old forward Hudson Elynuik for King, a six-foot, 195 lb. third year player.
“Heading into the trade deadline we were hoping to add a veteran defenseman and possibly an older forward. This transaction allows us to get a defenseman who regularly plays top four minutes in Spokane and has for the majority of the past two years,” Chynoweth stated on the ICE’s webpage. “Unfortunately to get a player like Tyler we had to give up a young player in Hudson Elynuik who should have lots of potential moving forward in his WHL career. We wish Hudson all the best with the Chiefs.”
King was the Chiefs’ first round selection (17th overall) in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. The Pilot Butte, Sask. resident will be in the ICE line-up Thursday (Jan. 2) when Kootenay travels to Medicine Hat.
Left winger Elynuik, from Calgary, has scored one goal and added an assist in 31 games for the ICE this season.
As a result of today’s transaction the ICE are now carrying 24 players, including two goaltenders, nine defenseman and 13 forwards.
The ICE are clinging to eighth place in the Eastern Conference at 19-18-2-1 (41 pts), one point ahead of the Red Deer Rebels who have two games in hand.
