Ice nipped by Warriors in Moose Jaw

The Kootenay Ice were edged 2-1 by the Moose Jaw Warriors in a rough and tumble Western Hockey League tilt Dec. 3.

All the scoring in the game took place in the first period, which also featured a couple of Saturday-night-at-the-fights bouts in front of about 4,000 Moose Jaw faithful.

Luke Paulson opened the scoring with Max Reinhart and Joe Antilla providing the helpers. With his assist, Reinhart’s point streak is now at nine games. The goal was Paulson’s second of the season.

Brett Lyon, with his 10th and World Junior Team Canada invitee Quinton Howden scored his 12th just 84 seconds apart near the end of the first period, and they proved to be all that was needed as Warrior’s netminder Luke Siemens barred the door after that.

The Ice pulled goalie Nathan Lieuwen with 1:20 left but could not get the equalizer.

With the loss the Ice remain atop the Central Division standings, with a 19-7-1-2 record. The Warriors move into a first place tie for the East Division with the Saskatoon Blades.

The Ice close out their season-long nine game road trip today (Sunday) against the Swift Current Broncos.

Their next home game is Friday, Dec. 9 against the third place Medicine Hat Tigers. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Cranbrook Rec-Plex.
