Local hockey fundraiser aims to fight cancer

The Joe Pires Memorial Tournament will be taking place in Sparwood on May 12 at the Sparwood Recreation Centre.

The second annual ball hockey tournament will feature 12 teams playing games of three-on-three ball hockey; as well as a cabaret afterwards. All proceeds of the event will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society in an effort to prevent this disease.

This event is dedicated to the memory of long-time Sparwood Resident Joe Pires, who lost his battle with cancer in December 2011. This event gathers family, friends and community members in an effort to raise awareness for cancer as well as honor a great man through sport and entertainment. The ball hockey tournament consists of rosters of 7-10 players; with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. May 12. The Cabaret will begin at 9 p.m. in the Sparwood Curling Rink.

“The Joe Pires Memorial Tournament, established in 2011, aims to raise money and awareness for the prevention of cancer,” Says event organizer Bill Ritchat. “By holding these events we are able to celebrate a life and contribute to a great cause in a unique way.”

This is second annual event looks to capitalize on a successful first year which raised over $9,200 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event has grown from eight to 12 teams in only a year. This event is open to the public who are encouraged to come watch entertaining hockey, participate in a prize raffle and enjoy the cabaret.
