Learn to Camp

Parks Canada and Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) are inviting young families and new Canadians to ‘Learn-to-Camp’ in Yoho National Park’s Kicking Horse Campground on June 22 and 23.

learntocampThe two-day program includes a presentation from a Parks Canada’s wildlife specialist on how to stay safe in bear country, practice with setting up a tent, a high tech geocaching treasure hunt with a Parks Canada interpreter, tips on what to pack, what to cook and how to start a campfire, s’mores, campfire music, and hiking tips and opportunities.

“The Learn-to-Camp initiative is a great opportunity for Canadians, especially those living in urban centres away from national parks, to discover the joys of camping,” said Melanie Kwong, Superintendent responsible for Yoho National Park. “Yoho is within driving distance of Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Kelowna, making it an ideal and iconic place for new, urban and young Canadians to embrace one of our national pastimes.”

The cost of the program is $88 per family of four, and $22 per additional participant with a maximum of six people per group. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Spots are limited. To register for this overnight camping experience, call 18887738888.

Fees cover camping equipment rental (tent and sleeping pads), dinner Saturday and breakfast Sunday, all scheduled workshops and activities and all campground and firewood fees. Participants need to find their own mode of transportation to Yoho, bring sleeping bags, pack a lunch and snacks for Saturday and Sunday as well as purchase a national park’s entry pass.

“Mountain Equipment Co-op has a deep passion for the outdoors and a long history of inspiring Canadians to camp as a way to explore the backcountry,”said Senja Palonen, MEC’s Community and Envoy Program Coordinator. “Through partnerships like the Learn-to-Camp initiative, MEC and Parks Canada will help more Canadians discover their love for the outdoors while learning the basics of camping in a fun and engaging environment.”
