What’s Up?
Gastony’s cliff-brake
By Larry Halverson/Friends of Kootenay
Not the prettiest plant to photograph but I was excited when I found it the other day growing in a limestone cliff crevice near Columbia Lake.
It is a Gastony’s cliff-brake (Pellaea gastonyi), a blue listed fern in B.C., which means it is at risk. They are quite rare and have only been recored a few times in southeastern B.C. A couple other local sites include the rock cliffs above Dry Gulch and the Radium Hot Springs pools.
