In search of the Milky Way

By Bob Ede

After a long stretch of cloudy weather I looked forward to heading into the bush to gaze at the stars and snap a few photos. To make it even more enticing the moon was a crescent and down most of the night, guaranteeing darkness, and there was a scheduled meteor shower! The stars were aligning, so to speak.

The sky was exceptionally dark and clear. The Milky Way looked like a handful of sand thrown into the night. Here and there a few Eta Aquarid meteors streaked across the sky. My dogs seemed puzzled to be out this early and stuck close to my tripod and me. It was silent except for the owls hooted all around.

I watched as long as I could, until the Milky Way disappeared and the sky turned to morning. I rode back in, ready for work, luckier than I’d left.
