Columbia Valley RCMP Report

ssgtmshehovacBy S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac

Divine intervention

It was a fairly quite Thanksgiving long weekend for the Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment. Bev and I spent Thanksgiving in Kamloops with family. As the brother-in-law was about to complete the prayer before dinner I interrupted and asked him to a little divine support for the Columbia Valley Rockies and his Kamloops Blazers. He included this request. So Wade, Saturday vs Revelstoke, good to go.

Conditions breached

At 10:57 p.m. on Oct. 8, detachment officers responded to a complaint of a male breaching his conditions by attending a residence in the 200 block of Black Forest Trail near Invermere. A 55-year-old male had departed the residence by the time police attended. The investigation is continuing with charges of breach of conditions and theft.

Search for lost intoxicated man

At 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, Columbia Valley Detachment was contacted by BC Ambulance to assist in locating an intoxicated male in the area of 10th St. and 13th Ave. regarding a medical emergency. Patrols of the area by both ambulance and police were negative.

Tepee damaged

At 8:37 a.m. on Oct. 10, the detachment received a report that the large tepee on display at the Shuswap Band office was taken down and damaged. Anyone with information is requested to contact the detachment.

Truck returned

At 10 p.m. Oct. 10, police were called in to assist with a complaint of theft of a truck in Canal Flats. The circumstances, when explained to the police, determined that the matter was a civil issue and not criminal. All involved cooperated and the truck was returned.

Boulder crash in KNP

At 8:20 a.m. on Oct,. 11, a 2003 Chev Cavalier driven by a 19-year-old female from Saskatchewan hit a large boulder on the Highway 3 north of Radium Hot Springs in Kootenay National Park. The vehicle suffered undercarriage damage and was towed back to Invermere. Parks Canada took care of the boulder.

It was the mechanic with his own key in Fairmont

At 8 a.m. Oct. 11, the detachment received a report of theft of a vehicle in Fairmont Hot Springs but was solved by the afternoon when it was learned the owner’s mechanic, who had a key for the vehicle, had picked it up for repairs.

Road rage

You would think with summer traffic now in the past we are seeing the end of some of our road rage type complaints. One such file would lead me to caution people on their own instinctive reactions.

Better you get the plate and if you think it is serious enough that you want some action, call the detachment, provide a statement and be prepared to go to court. Giving someone the one finger salute to indicate “your driving habit is rated number one” can initiate further escalation as it so happened this past weekend. The file indicated that the other driver simply gave a hand gesture to pull over so he could get your plate. The international hand signal for such a request is not taking your fingers and making a slicing throat motion. Emotions can run high and mixing it up with another driver can put you at risk as well as the other drivers on the road.
