Columbia Valley RCMP

Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 64 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them:

Dog appeared to be poisoned

On March 16, a 45-year-old female resident of Kootenay No. 3 Road called Columbia Valley RCMP to report that she had just returned from the vet with her dog, a cinnamon blue heeler that appeared to have been poisoned.

She brought her dog to the vet in Invermere where the vet agreed the dog was exhibiting signs of having been poisoned. The dog owner has no idea how the dog was poisoned, when it was poisoned, what it was poisoned with or who may have done it.

She was obviously upset about the incident and believes someone is targeting local dogs as they are upset about dogs roaming free in this area.

The owner could not specify who is upset about the dogs running free without their owner’s having them on leashes and had no suspects in mind. There was no evidence that the dog was purposely poisoned as opposed to having possibly ingested a poison accidentally.

Owners apologize for police being called

On March 20, a 46-year-old Canal Flats woman called Columbia Valley RCMP to report a 30-person fight outside a local drinking establishment in Canal Flats.

The complainant stated that there were no injuries at that point. Police attended in short order and found no one outside or inside the bar. Bar owners advised the fight was probably eight people, quick to start, quick to end, with no injuries and no police attendance required! The owners apologized for the intoxicated patron having called for police.

Intoxicated man unable to calm down

On March 20, at 9:45 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a report of a disturbance/mischief at a local hotel in Invermere. The complainant reported that an intoxicated 20-year-old male and ex-employee came into the lobby intoxicated demanding his pay cheque.

The male hit one of the computer screens, went through a bunch of papers behind the front desk and left to the bar. Members attended and located the male walking down 7th Avenue by 9th Street.

The male, who matched the physical and clothing description, was spoken to and admitted to having been at the hotel to request his pay cheque. The male was very intoxicated with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech and wobbling, as well as dilated pupils. After being spoken to, the male wasn’t able to calm down and was becoming more and more verbally aggressive with police.

As a result, he was arrested for Causing a disturbance, Mischief, and being intoxicated in a public place. He was then returned to detachment cells where he spent the night to sleep off his unruly disposition.
