De-icing needs -6C or warmer: Mainroad

Mainroad East Kootenay is urging drivers to remain vigilant for winter driving conditions.

“We are expecting sporadic snow flurries throughout the day with low cloud and the weather is slowly moving southeast through the area. This will be followed by cold (-15C or so) temperatures. We have compact snow with slippery sections on all highways in the service area. Plowing and sanding is in progress. We will be using a pre-wetted sand to combat these conditions,” Mainroad stated in an email update newsletter.

“We will commence salting and de-icing once road and air temperatures warm up to -6C or warmer for a long enough period (four to six hours) to allow de-icing chemicals to work and resultant slush to be removed,” the regional highways maintenance contractor explained.

Mainroad asks drivers to listen to road and weather reports and be prepared for changing road conditions.
