Drink some beer in the name of charities

Starting April 1, all proceeds from the sales of sample paddles at the Fernie Brewing Company will be donated to the Elk Valley Hospice. This will continue to benefit Hospice until the end of June.

Beer charity EV HospiceThe Fernie Brewing Company’s Cheers to Charity program has supported many local charities in the past. The program has benefitted charities ranging from the Fernie Food Bank to the Fernie Nordic Society and more.

The Elk Valley Hospice is grateful to be the latest charity chosen. Hospice volunteers decided to check out the program first hand Saturday, April, 4.

All participants agreed it was not only a worthwhile visit, but it was also an entertaining experience. Each person (of legal drinking age) was given a beer menu. After reading each beer’s description they chose four beers to try. Everyone was presented with a long wooden paddle which held their chosen mini beers.

The Brewery’s new full-time Tasting Room & Store Manager, Courtney, explained the order in which to taste beers is from lightest to darkest and then the tasting began.

Participants were amazed by the complexity of the beer tasting process. Courtney explained how each beer goes with a different food and even with different weather. The non-beer drinkers present compared it to matching wine with food.

Even though they are long time local residents, more than half of the Elk Valley Hospice participants had never been to the brewery before. They encourage everyone to visit it for themselves and drink some beer in the name of charity.
