RCMP respond to serious New Years Day assault

On January 1, at 2:45 a.m., Cranbrook RCMP responded to a report of a large fight at a house party in the Park Royal area.

Upon arrival police located several people in and around the residence as well as some attempting to leave the area if vehicles. Police quickly learned that two groups of people were fighting with each other, which involved several individuals. At some point during the altercation it is alleged that knives and pool cue balls were used as weapons.

Four of the individuals suffered significant injuries including slash wounds, knocked out teeth and bite marks. All individuals received medical attention locally and none are suffering from life threatening injuries.

Four subjects were taken into custody without incident at the scene. Three of them were located in a vehicle attempting to leave the area and the fourth was tracked by the police dog and found to be hiding in a nearby shed. A pool cue ball and knife believed used in the assault were also located and seized.

Two of the four accused individuals were released on a Promise to Appear for a future court date. The remaining two subjects were taken before a Judicial Justice of the Peace and have been remanded in custody awaiting their next court appearance on Tuesday, January 6.

Police are recommended various charges against each of the four individuals including assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats, obstruction of justice and breach of a court order.

“This is not a random act; the subjects knew each other and are known to police,” said S/Sgt. Dave Dubnyk.

Police have interviewed several people in relation to this investigation and would ask that anyone who may have witnessed the altercation to please contact the RCMP.
